Six billion individuals, soon to be eight, maybe ten billion. How will we be able to feed ourselves ?
While genetically modified crops are strongly and legitimately opposed, their promoters argue that they will solve the problem of hunger in the world… There is however a strong probablility that the ambition to nourish the planet with transgenic organisms, is more of a promotional argument for the biotechnical industries in order to develop their products refused by certain consumers.
This problem is completely different in third world countries where famine is not just a notion but a reality and they cannot afford to ignore technologies which could eradicate malnutrition. However, as many NGOs confirm, the principle cause of famine is the unbalanced distribution of wealth rather than the lack of food in the world. In countries suffering from famine, political and economical factors prevent the population from accessing food resources. Transgenic crops enriched with vitamin A are only in test phase and remain the object of a scientific controversy as to their efficiency. Patent and distribution rights are still being negotiated.
